ROUTINE CHAIR

The Routine Chair embodies peace in my daily life. It is where I find comfort at the start of my morning routine to where I end up before bed. It is simply to bring ease into a routine that already exists - never disturbing the space that already has its patterns.

IDEATION

Initial sketches and ideas for a the chair project.

After exploring a variety of seat types I ended up narrowing down to more floor-seating orientated designs. As this was a personal approach, I thought of my daily routine. I usually work and get ready on the floor, therefore I created the routine chair. It is an embodiment of my day-to-day life, and where I find comfort most. Which I believe to be the sole purpose of this piece - bringing comfort to my daily life.

As the main goal was to explore various upholstery techniques for this class - I created a step-by-step on how I would be making this chair.

Below are various material samples of what I wanted the final fabric to be. I ended up going with the green velvet for being a soft and comfortable material, that has a beautiful rigid structure to it.

FINAL MODEAL

Below are in context images of the chair.

  • I was never a fan of overly soft chairs, therefore went for a more rigid approach in the form.

  • The main purpose is to bring comfort to my daily routine - therefore a very personal design perspective to this piece.

  • I imagine this beside my bed, or the mirror for when I get up to get ready, or before I unwind at night.
