For my thesis project at Parsons, I set out to explore an intriguing question: How does makeup move? From the satisfying click of a compact hinge to the smooth twist of a lipstick tube, and the precision of a pump dispenser, I studied the mechanisms that shape our interactions with makeup.

The result is the Happy Hour Collection, a lineup of seven unique makeup products, each featuring a distinct mechanical design. Inspired by the rituals of a night out—whether it’s grabbing drinks with friends or hosting a cozy game night—this collection celebrates the joy of getting ready, a ritual cherished within the makeup community. By combining thoughtful engineering with playful design, the Happy Hour Collection highlights the tactile and emotional connections we form with our beauty routines.

A significant part of this project is the entire personal branding aspect I added to the collection to live in. With this, I took inspiration from New York City Speakeasies to complement the theme collection.

Ideation

I’ve always felt people underestimate the importance of makeup packaging and how fascinating it truly is. Makeup packaging holds great importance to the formula it contains.

How does powder move?

For powder products you want a structure to be tight for loose powders and structurally sound for pressed shadows to avoid breakage.

How does CREAM move?

Cream products have the possibility to melt, especially in hotter climates. Aiming for a flatter base for makeup helps to save that possibility from becoming a disaster.

How does LIQUID move?

Liquid products need to be sealed and covered to avoid getting dried out or spilling over.

MECHANISMS

A huge part of this project was my fascination with how makeup moves. Various makeup products come with different mechanisms - from openings to closing. I wanted to explore these to further expand my skillset and ability to model makeup in a 3D CAD Setting.
